Aircon Troubleshooting: How to Fix Common Issues

You’ll want to spend the warmer weather months being as comfortable as possible. This means that you’re going to be cranking up your air conditioning systems and of course, you want them to run without a hitch. However, even the best air conditioners will eventually run into issues.

If your AC unit isn’t cooling properly or you’ve recently heard it groaning, there’s no need for too much alarm. Behind most malfunctions are simple solutions that you can execute to restore the cool comfort of your home.

Here’s a list of common air conditioning problems and how to fix them.

The AC won’t turn on

At the top of everyone’s list of fears is when the AC system won’t turn on or it stops working completely. If this happens, check the thermostat’s batteries. The batteries might be dead and you’ll need to replace them. If the batteries are still in good condition, ensure the thermostat is in the ‘cooling’ mode and at the temperature you want.

If the thermostat isn’t the cause of the issue, check the system’s circuit breaker. You might need to switch it to the ‘on’ position.

The AC works but the air isn’t cold

If your AC turns on but doesn’t emit cold air, make sure that the thermostat is set properly and that all vents are open. If this doesn’t work, check the air filter. If it’s clogged with dust, dirt and other debris, the air won’t flow properly. Clean the filter with a soft brush, soap and water. To avoid this problem in the future, clean and change your filter regularly.

Another scenario that causes this issue is that your system is suffering from low refrigerant levels. The refrigerant is the life blood of your air conditioning system, similar to the motor oil in a vehicle. Without the right refrigerant level, humidity and heat cannot be removed efficiently from the air. If you have low refrigerant levels, your unit is likely experiencing leaks and you will need professional aircon servicing to fix the problem.

Water Drips from the AC

To avoid water damage to your home, turn off your unit if it starts leaking water. Your condensate drain line might be clogged up. You can try using a vacuum to unclog the line. If that doesn’t work, your condensate pump may be broken and you will need to repair or replace the damaged parts.

The AC makes strange noises

Squealing or screeching sounds that come from the blower motor indicates a faulty belt that might break or a motor bearing problem. Adding lubricant to the oil port can help.

A smacking noise when the blower runs could mean that the fanmotors are plagued by dirt and debris. Turn off the system and inspect if there’s anything stuck in the blower. If the sounds continue to persist, call a professional to inspect your unit.
